Jack Mattson, 71, of Union City, passed away unexpectedly at home of natural causes Wednesday, June 21, 2023.
A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. He will be privately interred at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater.
The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation in Union City.
Jack was born May 15, 1952 in Coldwater, Michigan to James and Maribelle (Wirt) Mattson. He grew up in Union City, where he was raised by his grandmother, Isabelle Mattson. He was proud of her and that she had received “Teacher of the Year” honors at Union City Community Schools.
Jack graduated from Union City High School in 1970 and moved to Ohio in the late 1970s. On October 20, 1982 he married the former Cheryl Ann Everhart in Ohio; however the union ended in divorce in 1996.
A man of multiple talents and interests, Jack worked for Huntington Bank, bartended and owned a sign shop while in Ohio. After he returned to Michigan in 1986, he owned and operated Mattson Paint and Custom in Union City. When not working, Jack’s hobbies included photography, model planes, hot air ballooning and his dogs.
He was intelligent, humorous, creative, and wasn’t afraid to share his thoughts with others. He enjoyed talking politics and being a Trump supporter. He spent enough time at McGhee’s in Union City that he thought of himself as part-owner.
Jack is survived by his children; Aaron (Angela) Everhart of Coldwater, Amanda (Rick) Cross of Burlington and Amber (Rick) Mickel of Virginia; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother, Maribelle Meinke; three sisters, LeAnn, Sandy and Diane; his former wife, Cheryl Everhart, and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hubert and Isabelle Mattson, his father, and his stepfather, Walter Meinke.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Humane Society of Branch County, 969 Wildwood Rd #9508, Quincy, MI 49082.
