KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One man was killed and another wounded in a shooting incident overnight in Kalamazoo.
Authorities say it’s the 10th death by gunfire in the city in 2023.
At 2:55 a.m. Saturday officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the area of Krom Avenue and East Clay Street for shots fired. Responding officers located Kenneth Lee Woodard Jr., who was mortally wounded, in the area of W Prouty Street and Union Street.
They say Woodard had sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident. Officers and paramedics rendered emergency medical aid and transported Woodard to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Another victim of the shooting, a 29-year-old male from Kalamazoo, was treated at an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers located multiple casings from the scene.
No arrests have been made. The investigation is open and active.
The killing of Woodard is the 10th homicide in Kalamazoo City in 2023. The first homicide occurred on April 4, 2023.
Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division are asking that witnesses come forward to talk with detectives about what they saw.
