(Reuters) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told a summit in Brussels on Tuesday she is “confident” the European Union (EU) and Mexico will conclude negotiations on an updated free trade deal in the coming months.
Last month, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his country and the EU had agreed to quickly finalize the deal, which has been under negotiation for several years, shortly after von der Leyen visited the Latin American country.
Earlier on Tuesday, Mexico’s new Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena, also participating in the summit, said she had a good conversation with the European Commission chief, and that von der Leyen could visit Mexico again “in the near future.”
