STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – A Pleasant Lake, Indiana man was arrested by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office following a motorcycle crash Friday night that critically injured an Angola woman.
The Sheriff’s Office say the crash happened on County Road 300 North near County Road 100 East. Deputies found a motorcycle on its side and off of the road along with two injured crash victims when they arrived.
A preliminary crash investigation indicated that the 1982 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by 40 year old Matthew J. Braun was traveling at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.
Braun lost control of the motorcycle. It then left the road and collided with a utility box. Both Braun and his passenger, 37 year old Jessica J. Goodman of Angola, were thrown from the motorcycle and injured.
Braun complained of injuries to his lower leg while Goodman sustained a head injury and was rendered unconscious.
The Sheriff’s Office says neither Braun nor Goodman were wearing helmets at the time of the crash. Braun was taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital by Steuben County EMS in serious but stable condition.
Goodman was flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center by Samaritan Helicopter in critical condition.
Braun was booked into the Steuben County Jail in connection with that investigation following treatment of his injuries at the hospital. He also had an unrelated outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Steuben County.
Braun is facing a felony for operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and two misdemeanors for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Bond was set at $10,000.
The crash still remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Fremont Police, Fremont Fire Department, Steuben County EMS, and the Indiana State Police.
