OVID TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There were without a doubt some scary moments for one truck driver and some motorists traveling on southbound I-69 around 5:20 p.m. Saturday afternoon, August 12 near Coldwater.
Michigan State Police Marshall post troopers were dispatched to an accident involving a semi near East Central Road in Branch County’s Ovid Township, where they discovered that a semi was transporting paint when it caught on fire and then exploded. No one was injured during the incident.
Both northbound and southbound lanes were initially shut down due to the explosion which caused debris to cross from the southbound to the northbound lanes of travel.
The northbound lanes of I-69 reopened shortly following, while the southbound lanes remained closed until 4:20 a.m. Sunday, August 13 for environmental hazard and cleanup.
The Michigan State Police was assisted by Coldwater Police and Fire Department at the incident which remains open pending further investigation.
