COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A South Bend, Indiana man was ordered to serve 16 months to five years in the Michigan Department of Corrections on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court in connection with a February 19 high speed pursuit that ended when his vehicle crashed into a downtown Bronson building.
According to on line court records, 24-year-old Luis Trevino entered a guilty plea to a charge of third degree fleeing from a police officer.
In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed a charge of assaulting, resisting and obstructing a police officer.
Trevino was given credit for one day served in jail.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department reported at the time they stopped a 2017 Dodge Charger with an expired or improper license on U.S. 12 and Markay Drive near the Capri Drive-In.
The vehicle then accelerated and a pursuit ensued heading west on U.S. 12. The Sheriff’s Department said in a news release the suspect vehicle reached speeds over 120 MPH as it entered the City of Bronson.
It eventually failed to navigate a left turn onto South Matteson Street from U.S. 12 and lost control. It struck the main utility pole and snapped it in half before striking the building at 103 West Chicago Street which houses a photography studio.
The Sheriff’s Department received assistance from Bronson Police, the Bronson Fire Department and Consumers Energy.
