BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Bronson Fire Chief Scott Wilber told the Bronson City Council on Monday night that the Bronson Fire Department has received a $70,000 MI Fire Equipment Grant from the State of Michigan Treasury Department.
The funds will be used to purchase personal protective equipment. Wilber said the equipment purchased from the grant funds will increase firefighter safety.
He says the dual certified wildland/extrication gear that each firefighter will get greatly reduces the chance of overexertion and heat related injury when they are on a hot weather call that does not involve a fire.
The grant will also provide the fire department with funds to purchase a thermal imaging camera.
Other items scheduled to be purchased through the grant include 25 particulate blocking firefighting hoods which help keep carcinogens found in smoke from reaching firefighters’ skin, four sets of structural turnout gear and 10 pairs of structure firefighting gloves.
Wilber says $12 million was allocated for this grant project statewide for fire departments that are primarily made up of part time, on-call, and volunteer firefighters.
Wilber says this grant is 100% funded by the state of Michigan, there is no match from the Bronson Fire Department.
