UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Fire Department has received a $2,000 grant from Michigan Gas Utilities that will be used to pay for new structural firefighting boots.
It’s part of $10,000 in grants that are being awarded by Michigan Gas Utilities to support first responders throughout its communities.
The funding is part of the utility’s Rewarding Responders Grant program, which helps police, fire and emergency medical service agencies purchase lifesaving equipment or important training.
The boots being bought by the Union City Fire Department are said to be a key piece of protective equipment for firefighters, allowing them to safely respond to and move around a variety of emergency scenes, including fires, vehicle accidents and rescue efforts.
Other grants were awarded to the Berrien County Public Safety Communication Center as well as to fire departments in Ida Township, Leighton Township and Martin.
MGU Vice President Mike Baker says, “This program is one of the many ways we make the safety of our employees and communities a critical focus every day. Our first responders race toward danger and distress 24/7. We’re honored to help provide these vital tools to keep everyone safe.”
MGU has now awarded more than $75,000 through the program to public safety agencies.
