HILLSDALE, MI (WTVB) – It could be awhile before a damaged railroad viaduct in Hillsdale will be fixed. A garbage truck crashed into the Hallett Street bridge on Monday which caused extensive damage to the viaduct and the railroad track.
The driver was injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The City of Hillsdale says West Hallett Street at the railroad overpass bridge is closed to all traffic until further notice. Detour routes have been posted.
It will be at least a week before the bridge can be fixed and the road re-opened.
The clearance for the bridge is only nine feet, eight inches. It has been the site of several crashes over the years as city and state officials have been unable to come up with a permanent height solution.
The Indiana Northeastern Railroad has daily runs over that section of track.
