COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved a resolution and sales agreement with Ibrahim and Khalil Abdullah during a special meeting on Thursday so that the Abdullahs can purchase the city owned building at 71 and 73 West Chicago.
The Abdullahs offered the city $80,000 as they want to develop the property into a international grocery and Mediterranean restaurant.
They had the high bid of four offers that were submitted after the property was listed with a local realtor.
Council member Travis Machan wanted to see the money from the transaction be used for the downtown area.
The City Council accepted the offer from the Abdullahs during their September 25, 2023 meeting.
The City Charter requires that when public property is sold, the conveyance must remain on the table for 30 days. The 30 days expires on Wednesday.
City Manager Keith Baker said the purchasers requested that a special meeting be held on Thursday afternoon because the next regularly scheduled meeting was not until November 13 and the Abdullahs preferred not to wait until then to move forward with the sale.
Mayor Tom Kramer said near the end of the October 9 meeting that Ryan Kinsey had increased his original offer to $89,900 in order to relocate a barbershop and put in second floor apartments.
Kinsey’s original bid was $79,900, just $100 less than the Abdullahs. But the City Council did not take any action as no motion was made.
