BUTLER TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – The Butler Township Planning Commission granted a special use permit this past Thursday night from a local farmer who wants to start a commercial kennel for dogs.
Alvin Graber said in his application they would use a 12 x 30 building on his six acre farm on Clarendon Road near Crandall and Butler Roads and there would be no employees or parking. The land is currently zoned prime agricultural.
The animal control issue is apparently back at the township level after Branch County Commissioners did not take formal action in April 2022 on a resolution that would have been in favor of an 23 page Animal Control and Protection Ordinance for the county’s townships.
A committee that helped put the ordinance together heard complaints from some citizens and the matter never came back before Commissioners after being pulled from a meeting agenda.
Branch County Prosecutor Zach Stempien said at the time they were looking for support from Commissioners for townships to pass a uniformed animal ordinance.
