COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – According to a letter sent to staff members at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital on Tuesday, Site Administrator Dan Schwanke says the hospital has decided to close its Labor, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum department by the end of the year.
In the letter which was obtained by WTVB News, Schwanke said it was a difficult decision but it is being done to help insure the long-term viability of the hospital.
He said, “We realize the impact and disruption this will cause; know that we are committed to working with each patient to make the transition as smooth as possible. We will also work with our employees affected by this decision.”
This comes on the heels of the hospital shutting down ProMedica Home Health serving Branch and Hillsdale Counties and ProMedica Hospice serving Branch, Hillsdale and St. Joseph Counties.
Schwanke said in a letter to staff members last month that both agencies would likely close by December 10, 2023 and that this decision is part of ProMedica’s overall exit of the hospice and home care businesses. But the Coldwater office at 300 East Chicago was closed for good on October 27.
On April 1, 2023, ProMedica Health System, Inc., and an affiliate of American Healthcare Services, Inc., AHS Coldwater LLC, entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement for the sale of substantially all of the assets of the Coldwater hospital for $8,500,000.
The proposed sale was made public just over a month later. The closing was conditioned upon, and subject to review and approval by the State Attorney General. But the proposed sale has apparently hit some snags.
The Attorney General’s Office has posted on its web site that ProMedica Health System, Incorporated exercised its option to terminate the proposed sale of ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital to American Healthcare Services on November 3.
Tuesday’s letter from Schwanke to hospital staff members said, “ProMedica remains committed to navigating this complex sale process which may take several more months to complete. While we remain in communication with AHS and are hopeful to complete the transaction with them, we are open to conversations with other prospective partners. We will supply additional details as the process moves forward.”
The letter went on to say, “In the meantime, ProMedica will continue to run the hospital and deliver clinic excellence and compassionate care in the Coldwater community.”
