COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Prosecuting Attorney Zach Stempien issued a statement on Friday concerning the investigation involving what was perceived as a potential threat to Quincy Community Schools.
Quincy Schools were closed on Thursday and Friday due to what were called “concerning messages” on social media.
Quincy Police Chief Mike Kolassa said on Thursday a message was posted on a social media site by a local juvenile and that his report would be turned into the Prosecutor’s office.
Stempien says at this time, the investigation remains ongoing as his office is working with administrators from Quincy Schools, the Quincy Police Department and the Michigan State Police.
He says, “This Office is committed to transparency and openness and understands that the lack of information at this time may be frustrating to parents, students, and members of our community. However, to ensure a complete and exhaustive investigation, this Office and the investigating agency must be mindful of various legal and ethical restrictions on the public release of information prior to charging an individual. Once more information is known, the agencies involved in this investigation will continue to update the public on the status of the case, as allowed by law.”
Stempien adds this investigation is a top priority of his office and the various agencies involved. He says the goal is to have answers for all those affected by this issue as quickly as possible so that the Quincy School District may return to school safely.
Anyone with information on this case is being asked to contact the Quincy Police Department or the Michigan State Police.
