MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – The defending Interstate 8 boys basketball co-champions squared off Friday at Marshall High School, with the Coldwater Cardinals holding off the host Redhawks 48-46.
After several lead changes, Coldwater took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter thanks in large part to a 20/27 performance at the free throw line. After a pair of Austin Downs free throws with 12.9 second left in regulation to make the score 48-44, the Cardinals congregated on the court, thinking that Marshall had called a timeout. They did not, and the Coldwater bench was assessed a technical foul. Marshall’s Ty Keeler sunk his technical free throws, and on the ensuing possession, his jumper at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime bounced off the hoop to preserve the Cardinals’ two-point victory.
Coldwater’s Gavin Taylor had a game-high 18 points along with 2 rebounds and 2 steals, Ayden Dirschell added 13 points and 9 boards, and Austin Downs went 8/12 from the charity stripe to finish with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. The Cardinals improved to 2-4 overall, 2-0 in the Interstate 8, and will welcome Portage Northern to the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium next Tuesday.
Austin Burns led Marshall with 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Austin Miller had 10 points and 3 boards. The Redhawks dropped to 3-3 overall, 1-1 in the Interstate 8, and will host Mason next Tuesday.
