COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman says the scheduled demolition of the former County Jail is still on track for this year.
He told County Commissioners during their work session last Thursday the hazardous material assessment has been completed.
Norman indicated one company could handle the abatement of the hazardous material and the demolition.
The County was successful in obtaining a grant from the State of Michigan last year to offset some of the cost.
The grant was part of a program offered by the State of Michigan in which over $21 million was made available to communities to address vacant and abandoned properties.
Following the demolition of the nearly 70-year-old building, the road around the remaining buildings and the area around the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will be asphalted.
The County will then decide on how the land where the old jail was located will be used.
