BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Battle Creek Police Chief Shannon Bagley provided more details during a Friday morning news conference about the previous day’s fatal shooting of a Texas man in the downtown area.
The shooting happened Thursday afternoon inside Cafe Rica at 62 East Michigan Avenue after officers went there looking for a suspect in a felonious assault that was reported about 40 minutes earlier at the W.K. Kellogg House.
Police say 29-year-old Dario Arguello of San Antonio was initially compliant but he resisted when an officer tried to handcuff him.
The officer had to use her taser but it had no effect. Backup officers saw Arguello on top of and fighting with the female officer.
A second attempt by the backups to taser Arguello once again had no effect. He then grabbed and fired the female officer’s gun, striking her in the leg.
One of the backup officers shot Arguello in order to stop his actions. He was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave while a Michigan State Police investigation is underway.
The officer who was shot was hospitalized at Bronson Battle Creek. She is expected to recover.
