Betty Jane Bates, our family’s matriarch, danced into a heavenly celebration on February 16, 2024, to join her beloved husband, Wesley.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no services held at this time. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
Betty was born September 26, 1933, to Walter and Hazel (Lewis) Ernsberger in Coldwater, MI. Hazel passed when Betty was very young, Walter re-married Pauline Sanders who raised Betty as her own. Betty married Wesley Bates on June 23, 1951, in Coldwater. He preceded her in death on December 25, 2014.
Betty was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker. She was an avid collector of teddy bears and had over 750 salt and pepper shakers from all over the world. She enjoyed cooking, canning, and traveling. Betty loved anything Elvis and soap operas. She spent much of her time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Betty is survived by her children Robert Bates Sr. of Coldwater, Charles Bates Sr. of Coldwater; her sister-in-law Theresa Ernsberger of Coldwater; her special niece Penny Ernsberger (Greg) St. Cyr of Caseville; her 6 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, and many other loving nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded by her parents; her siblings Fred (E.J.) Ernsberger; Lawrence (Joyce) Ernsberger, Donald Ernsberger, her sister-in-law Ute Ernsberger; her great-grandson Zach Bates.
A special thank you to Elara Caring Hospice for their dedicated care and treating Betty like one of their own family members. In addition, a loving thank you to Robert Bates Jr. (family), Charles Bates Jr. (family), and Penny St. Cyr for their devoted care of Betty during such a difficult time.
