BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers jumped out to a 15-0 lead and went on to defeat the Quincy Orioles 58-52 in the Division Three District opener at Bronson on Monday night.
After falling behind by a sizeable margin, the Orioles began playing better but the Chargers were ahead 18-10 at the end of the first quarter. Quincy shrank the deficit to 27-21 at the half and controlled the third quarter 19-12, taking their first lead of the game, 40-39.
The fourth quarter went back and forth but the Chargers outscored Quincy 19-12 as they were able to make a few more plays and hit crucial free throws to seal the win.
Brandon Miner had a double-double for Quincy with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Grant Carter added 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Alex Barry had nine points.
Eli Payne scored a game-high 25 points for Union City while Jeremy Zehr had 12 points.
Union City is now 14-9 and will face Bronson in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.. Quincy finishes 9-14.
Homer defeated Reading 57-54 in the other Division Three district game at Bronson on Monday. Homer will face Centreville on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m..
Elsewhere on the opening night of the MHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament, Tekonsha defeated Pansophia Academy 39-21 in the opening game of the Division Four district at Litchfield. The game was stopped midway through the fourth quarter due to a fight.

Litchfield defeated Camden-Frontier 66-36 in the second game on Monday. Tekonsha will face Hillsdale Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday followed by Hillsdale Will Carleton Academy against Litchfield.
