DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Four Branch County wrestlers will be vying for Division Four state championships on Saturday afternoon at the M.H.S.A.A. Individual Wrestling Finals at Ford Field in Detroit.
The Union City Chargers and the Bronson Vikings both have two wrestlers in the finals.
The 150 pound championship match will be an all-Branch County affair as Union City’s Montana Connell will face Bronson’s Gabe Erwin.
Erwin pinned Blake Holder of Lawton in 3:23 in one of the semifinal matches on Friday night. Connell advanced to the finals with a 13-7 decision over Cayden Bradburn of White Lake.
Logan Mears of Union City and Layne Knisely of Bronson also made the championship round.
Mears made the 132 pound finals with a 8-4 semifinal decision over Gauge Stampfler of Delton-Kellogg. Mears will face Haylen Buell of Martin on Saturday after Buell defeated Union City’s Alex Boyer on a 9-2 decision.
Knisely advanced to the 157 pound finals with a pin of Mason Mansfield of Gobles in 1:35. He will face Gavin Schoff of Niles Brandywine on Saturday.
Boyer, Landyn Crance (138) and Aidan Taylor (144) are in the consolation bracket for Union City. Crance saw his hopes for a third straight state championship come to an end in the 138 pound semifinals as he lost in sudden victory overtime to Jacob Gillison of Benzie Central 8-6. Blayne Crance (1-2 at 106) and Mitchell Graham (1-2 at 113) have been eliminated.
Bronson’s Jacob Britten (190), Owen Kimmons (126) and McKenna Webster (girls-135) are in the consolation bracket. Britten and Kimmons are both 2-1. Webster is 2-1 after she was pinned in the semifinals by Paisley Denault of Clarkston in 3:05.
Mason Lindsey (1-2 at 165) and Carson Norton (0-2 at 175) have both been eliminated.
