COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Junior Ayden Dirschell was voted by his teammates as Most Valuable Player for the Coldwater Cardinal boys basketball team during their team banquet Tuesday at Bill’s Grill House at the Coldwater Golf Course.
Other awards that were voted on by team members include:
- Most Improved Player: Austin Downs
- Best Defensive Player (tie): Niko Downs, Zach Coffing
- Leadership Award: Zach Coffing
- Scout Team/Bench Player (tie): Austin Downs, Kaden Lewis
- Hustle Award: Niko Downs
- Dedication Award: Niko Downs
- Most Sportsmanlike: Niko Downs
Dirschell also earned a spot in the CHS boys basketball record book: his 7.59 rebounds per game this past season is the tenth highest season average, He is also eighth in season average in steals, averaging 2.39 per game durign the 2022-23 season.
Dirschell was the only Cardinal representative on the Interstate 8 All-Conference team, while sophomore Gavin Taylor earned Honorable Mention honors. Dirschell, Taylor, Niko Downs, Kaden Lewis, and Jackson Reilly were named to the Interstate 8 Academic All-Conference team.
Coldwater finished the season 6-17 overall; they tied Hastings for fifth place in the league standings at 4-8.
Sixteen boys basketball teams across the state have punched their tickets to the MHSAA Semifinals Thursday and Friday at the Breslin Center in East Lansing following Tuesday’s Quarterfinals:

The Semifinals in Divisions 3 and 4 will be Thursday, while the Division 1 and 2 Semifinals will be Friday. All four championship games will be played Saturday.
