ROSEMONT, IL (WTVB) – This past Saturday, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School of Coldwater joined 159 of the top middle school quiz bowl teams at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago for the 2024 Middle School National Championship Tournament to determine who was the best.
Quiz bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students. Quiz bowl teams use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture.
The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas.
Participation in quiz bowl both reinforces lessons from the classroom and encourages players to develop new intellectual interests.
The team consisted of Eva Aerts, Kathryn Bauer, Ava Chockley, Azurae Long, Gracie Mescher, and Trey Powell. The team was coached by Kevin Paradine.
St. Charles Borromeo was one of nine Michigan teams competing at the national championship.
St. Charles Borromeo finished the preliminary rounds with a 1-7 record.
There were some tense moments. St. Charles Borromeo suffered a heartbreakingly narrow loss to Pope John XXIII from Evanston, Illinois, 105-100 during round 8.
St. Charles Borromeo’s shot at the playoffs ended when they lost to St. Michael (LA) from Crowley, Louisiana in round 7.
The 2024 Middle School National Championship Tournament’s field featured 160 teams from 26 states and South Korea.
Sunday following the tournament the team attended Mass at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Rosemont Illinois and then visited Brookfield Zoo thanks to a generous donation from a team sponsor.
