LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Teacher salaries in Michigan are now under the national average.
A report published by the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative at Michigan State University finds the average salary of a teacher in the state is $64,884, which is about the same as neighboring Great Lakes states, but 41st in the nation.
The average starting salary for a teacher in Michigan is just under $39,000. The state does not have a minimum salary requirement for teachers.
Jason Burns, the lead author of the study says, “If teacher salaries had kept up with inflation since 1999, the average teacher in Michigan would be earning a little under $82,000 right now, which would actually put them on par with college graduates overall.”
