COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In a M.H.S.A.A. Division Three pre-district baseball game that finally had to be moved to Lowe Field in Coldwater because of four straight days of rain, the Bronson Vikings advanced to the district semifinals with a 3-2 victory over the Quincy Orioles on Wednesday night.
The Vikings and Orioles were originally scheduled to play Tuesday afternoon at Quincy but rain forced a postponement for 24 hours.
Due to the condition of the field at Quincy High School and with more rain falling during the early morning hours on Wednesday, it was decided to move the game to Bronson where a tarp kept their field in playable condition.
But more heavy rain hit Bronson about 20 minutes before game time which forced another change in plans. Coldwater Community Schools and Coldwater baseball coach Randy Spangler offered the use of Lowe Field and the game was finally played under the lights on Wednesday night.
As for the game, all of the Viking runs were unearned as they avenged a pair of losses to the Orioles on May 8. The Orioles had the tying and winning runs on base in the seventh but a line drive was speared by Bronson shortstop Owen Kimmons for the final out of the game.
Ryan Kempter led the Orioles with three hits and a RBI. Jimmy Maynard added two hits. Quincy pitcher Brennen Allman did not allow a earned run and struck out eight Vikings. Quincy finished their third straight winning season at 15-14.
Bronson statistics were not provided. The Vikings will play Jonesville at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the district semi-finals at Climax-Scotts. The winner will face either Union City or Climax-Scotts for the district title.
