GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Twenty-five-year-old Brandon Ortiz-Vite has been ordered to stand trial on charges including murder and carjacking for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Ruby Garcia, in March along US-131.
Ortiz-Vite is in the U.S. illegally after having been deported to his native Mexico in 2020 and called 9-1-1 from an Allegan County church a few days after Garcia was found dead.
He told police he wanted to be taken to jail out of concerns for his own safety, saying her family “wants to take justice into their own hands.”
Detective Sergeant Aaron Tubergen testified Ortiz-Vite wanted to keep the relationship with Garcia going, but she wanted to break up.
