John D. “Gunny” Morrell, 74, of Coldwater passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at his home in Coldwater.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Coldwater with Pastor Dan Erwin officiating. Interment will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 21, 2024, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.
John was born January 3, 1950, in Muskegon, MI to DeLore and Thelma (Ellison) Morrell. He married Nancy Sage on March 27, 1976, in Muskegon.
John proudly served in the US Marine Corp during the Vietnam War from 1968-1975 and also at the US Embassy’s in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Mogadishu.
He served many years in the US Army Reserve, US Coast Guard Reserve, the Army National Guard and 5 years with the Branch County Sheriff Reserve.
John earned a bachelor’s degree in Family Life Education from Spring Arbor College and spent 26 years working within the state prison system as a counselor. John worked in Jackson, Muskegon and eventually retired from Florence Crane/Camp Branch in 2001.
John was a member of the Coldwater First Baptist Church, the Quincy American Legion and the Marine Corp League. He enjoyed the casino, westerns and war movies and anything related to the military.
He was an outdoorsman who loved fishing. John treasured time with his family and especially loved going to his grandchildren’s sporting events.
John is survived by his wife Nancy; his children Ann (Russell Guercio) Brois of Coldwater, John (April) Morrell, Jr. of Coldwater, Mary (Ryan) Gray of Coldwater; his grandchildren Jadon & Loren Brois, Garrett & Brennan Morrell, Samuel & Abel Gray; his siblings DeLore (Sally) Morrell of Muskegon and Joan Houchins of Muskegon.
He was preceded in death by his sister Jane Breen.
