COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Battle Creek man wanted on a warrant since January of 2016 for alleged sex crimes was arraigned Thursday in Branch County District Court after being brought back from Florida.
54-year-old Alex Edward New is charged following a Quincy Police investigation in connection with alleged incidents in 2009 and 2010. He had been wanted on charges of first degree and second degree criminal sexual conduct in which the alleged victim was under the age of 13.
According to Branch County court documents, the alleged victim was a girl who was six to seven years old at the time. Documents filed in 2016 also stated New avoided interviews with Quincy Police and absconded from parole for another criminal sexual conduct offense. The U.S. Marshall’s Service discovered New was living in Florida following a fugitive investigation.
A $200,000 cash or surety bond was set during Thursday’s arraignment and a not guilty plea was entered on New’s behalf.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for July 9 with a preliminary exam set for July 16.
Branch County Prosecutor Zack Stempien turned the case over to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel as part of Operation Survivor Justice.
