COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was a tale of two halves at Cardinal Field as Coldwater hosted Pennfield on Homecoming Night. There were three successfully recovered onside kicks and six touchdowns scored in the first half between the two teams, while the defenses stepped up and allowed only one second half score as the Cardinals held off the Panthers 28-21.
Coldwater won the coin toss, elected to receive, and marched the ball down the field on their first possession, with Kayden Roby scoring on a 4-yard run. Pennfield turned the ball over on downs, and on the Cardinals’ next drive, they were forced to punt. The ball went over Manuel Hernandez’s head, and it was eventually picked up by Pennfield’s Johnathan Lake, who returned it for a score from 25 yards out.
Pennfield recovered an onside kick and scored on the second play of the second quarter, as quarterback Calvin Paesens found Lake from 23 yards out. On the next possession, Coldwater would score on a 61-yard pass from Dracyn Foster to Kendall Austin. The Cardinals succeeded in recovering their own onside kick, and scored on a 49-yard QB draw from Foster. Yet another onside kick was recovered by Coldwater; one play later, Foster connected with Evan Lewis for a 38-yard score.
Coldwater would take a 28-14 lead into the locker room at halftime; there would be only one TD the entire second half, on a 1-yard run from Pennfield’s Brenden Back.
Foster finished 2-for-9 passing for 99 yards, 2 touchdowns, and no interceptions, while also rushing for 67 yards on five carries and a score. Roby led the ground game with 15 carries for 85 yards and a TD, while Naseem Taha had 15 carries for 46 yards. Jackson Reilly led the defense with 9 tackles, while Roby added 7.
Brenden Back led Pennfield with 28 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown, while Calvin Paesens was 4-for-15 passing for 41 yards and a score. Gavin May had 10 tackles.
The Cardinals improved to 3-3 overall, 1-3 in the Interstate 8, and will visit Okemos for a non-conference game next Friday. The Panthers dropped to 1-5 overall, 0-3 in the Interstate 8, and will host Marshall next week.
