(Reuters) – The New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh after the team lost three of their first five games of the National Football League season, the club said on Tuesday.
Saleh took over as coach of the Jets in 2021 after spending four seasons as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator and the team have gone 20-36 during his tenure while failing to make the playoffs each year.
Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will be the interim head coach, both ESPN and FOX Sports said.
New York began this season with Super Bowl aspirations given the return of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who recovered this year from an Achilles injury suffered in the 2023 season opener.
The Jets lost to the San Francisco 49ers in their first match, then beat the Tennessee Titans and New England Patriots before losing consecutive games to the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.
New York host AFC East division rivals Buffalo Bills (3-2) on Monday.
