GIRARD TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Three persons were injured Sunday morning in a crash on I-69 south of Dayburg Road after the driver of a vehicle fell asleep at the wheel.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says the crash was reported at 7:33 a.m..
They say 70-year-old Dennis Bates of Kalamazoo was driving a southbound 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 when he fell asleep.
He crossed over the median and the northbound I-69 lanes and rolled his pickup truck in the ditch of the northbound lane. The vehicle occupants were trapped and had to be extricated by the Coldwater Fire Department.
Bates and 64-year-old passenger Kim Bates were transported to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital for minor injuries.
Another passenger, 70-year-old Joyce Whimper-Frost (70) of Kalamazoo, was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo by Life Care Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
The Branch County Sheriffs Office were assisted on scene by the Coldwater Fire Department and LifeCare Ambulance.
