COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Board of Education approved a proposal to start a boys volleyball club team at Coldwater High School during its meeting Monday night.
According to the proposal prepared by current girls varsity volleyball coach Kelsey Closson, girls freshman volleyball coach Joe Closson, and fellow CHS teacher Becky Heaton, 48 boys have expressed interest in playing club volleyball as a spring sport.
Estimated startup costs for the 2025 season, including uniforms, balls, carts, membership in the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association, and fees for officials for home contests, would range between $5,300 and $8,300, with all costs to be covered through fundraising. The club is not asking the school to contribute financially.
The proposal comes on the heels of boys volleyball being approved as a tournament sport by the Michigan High School Athletic Association starting in the 2025-26 school year.
According to MIVCA, interest in boys volleyball has grown from four teams in 2018 to 69 in 2024.
