GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WTVB) – Nick Oosterhouse’s layup with 2.4 seconds left in regulation lifted Grand Rapids Covenant Christian to a 34-32 victory over Coldwater Saturday afternoon at Cornerstone University’s Mol Arena duing the second day of the Cornerstone Holiday Tournament.
Covenant Christian led 9-5 after one, but the Cardinals took a 14-11 lead into the halftime break thanks to a 9-2 second quarter. Coldwater had a 14-12 advantage in the third frame, but the Chargers clamped down defensively with an 11-4 edge in the final stanza that included Oosterhouse’s late-game heroics.
No player for either team scored in double digits. Austin Downs led the way for Coldwater with 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists, while Jackson Reilly had 8 points and 5 rebounds, and Ayden Dirschell added 6 points, 10 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
The Cardinals, who fell to 4-5 on the season, are idle until their January 4th home game against Holt.
Covenant Christian, a Division 3 quarterfinalist last season, improved to 7-1. Jayden Bylsma led the Chargers with 8 points off the bench, while Ben Elzinga and Evan Pipe had 6 points apiece, and Oosterhouse finished with 5.
