SHERWOOD, MI (WTVB) – The May 7 tornados that struck Sherwood Township in northwestern Branch County was one of the top stories of 2024.
Branch County Emergency Management Director Tim Miner said the twisters destroyed nine homes while four others sustained major damage. The tornados struck during the dinner hour. Miner spoke to WTVB News the morning after the storms.
Miner says the homes were all on Arney Road near Oliverda Road outside of Sherwood. A number of homes were occupied when the storm hit, but only one injury was eventually reported.
It was later determined the area was hit by EF-2 and EF-1 tornados.
Miner said the tornados caused significant damage along a six-mile path in Branch County.
The EF-2 tornado covered 19 miles across 2 counties. The maximum winds were estimated at 130 mph with a path 950 yards wide.
There were 24 homes that received minor damage while 19 homes experienced superficial damage.
Miner says this assessment does not include the dozens of agricultural structures and barns impacted by the tornado.
