UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers defeated long time rival Athens 48-47 in a non-conference girls basketball game Monday night at McNett Fieldhouse but the Chargers had to hold off a furious Athens comeback to score the victory in what turned out to be a barnburner.
Athens led 34-30 after the third quarter but the Chargers scored the first 16 points of the final quarter to take a 46-34 lead.
The Indians outscored the Chargers 13-2 during the final frantic minutes but their rally fell short.
Ellie Williams led the Chargers with 14 points while Nala Payne and Hannah Schofield both scored 10 points.
Maria Bronsink led the Indians with a game-high 17 points while Mallory Kincaid added 15 points.
The Chargers snapped a three game losing streak as they improved to 4-6.
Union City also won the J.V. game 41-25.
