COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved a recommendation from city staff on Monday night to not increase the number of days consumer fireworks may be used in Coldwater.
City Manager Keith Baker said they recently received a request from members of the local Arab American/Muslim community to amend a city ordinance covering fireworks.
He pointed out the ordinance allows for the minimum number of required days for residents to use fireworks for personal use as permitted by State law.
But Baker added as outlined in City Attorney Amanda O’Boyle’s memo to the council, the City’s ordinance does not regulate display fireworks, which are defined as “large fireworks devices that are explosive materials intended for use in fireworks displays”.
He said there were several reasons why the staff felt expanding the number of days for consumer fireworks was not a good idea.
O’Boyle and Baker surveyed other communities who may allow expanded use of fireworks.
The dates for display fireworks established by State law that the City adopted are all federally recognized holidays. None of the holidays have any religious group affiliation.
