COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal varsity basketball teams welcomed the Western Panthers to the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium Wednesday night for a pair of games rescheduled from Tuesday, and it was a mixed bag for the home fans.
The Panther girls basketball team showed why they were ranked ninth in Division 2 in the first Michigan Sports Writers poll of the season, as they prevailed over the Lady Cards 49-28.
Western led 15-8 after one, 25-14 at halftime, and 36-17 after three. Coldwater was held to 10-of-27 shooting from the field and were out-rebounded 39-21.
Marie Powers had a team-high 9 points and 3 rebounds, while Mya Porter added 8 points, 2 assists, 4 steals, and 4 blocks. Elli Foley had 5 points and 4 rebounds before she left the game late in the first half with an injury as the Cardinals fell to 7-4 overall, 4-1 in the Interstate 8.
Rayah Hitt led all scorers with 22 points, while Bayli Stewart added 13, as the Panthers improved to 9-1 overall, 5-0 in the Interstate 8.

In the nightcap, the Cardinal boys broke open a 9-6 game after the first quarter by outscoring Western 14-3 in the second and 20-7 in the third as they won 53-35.
Nine Coldwater players contributed to the scoring; Gavin Taylor and Austin Downs led the way with 9 points apiece, while Ayden Dirschell had 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the Interstate 8, a half game ahead of second place Marshall.
Maverick Hammond had a game-high 11 points for the defending I-8 champion Panthers, who fell to 6-5 overall, 2-3 in the league.
