BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City Chargers jumped out to a big lead and never looked back as they defeated the Bronson Vikings 46-28 on Wednesday night to capture a M.H.S.A.A. Division Four team district championship on the Chargers home mat.
It’s the first time in 26 years Bronson has not advanced out of the team districts.
Pins by Mason Hawthorne at 132 and by Logan Mears at 138 set for the tone for the match which was viewed by a jammed packed crowd.
A technical fall by Aiden Taylor at 144 followed by another pin by Alex Boyer at 150 and a decision for Montana Connell at 157 gave Union City a 26-0 lead.
The 9th ranked Vikings fought back to within 26-16 on a pin by Layne Knisely at 165, a void for Mason Lindsey at 175 and a major decision by Connor Harvey at 190.
But a decision for Union City’s William Thompson at 215 and a pin by Carson Danke at 285 put the Chargers back in control as they moved ahead 35-16.
Bronson’s Brayton Cosby scored a pin at 106 to cut the lead to 35-22. Union City’s Blayne Crance won on a void at 113 which clinched the victory.
The final two matches were split with Union City’s Kaden Russell scoring a technical fall at 120 and Bronson’s Kenric Smith winning on a void at 126.
Bronson advanced to the finals by defeating Reading 45-30 thanks in part to six voids.
Union City will host a team regional next Wednesday. The Chargers will face Mendon in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Coldwater was knocked out of the M.H.S.A.A. Division Two team wrestling district at Marshall by the Harper Creek Beavers 67-12 in the semifinals.
The Cardinals had a 12-6 lead after pins by Dayton Miller at 150 and Gage Fuller at 157 but Harper Creek scored 61 straight points to close out the match.
