BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s boys basketball team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek. But the Cardinals forced four overtime periods before the host Spartans could claim a 79-77 victory in an MHSAA Division 1 District Semifinal contest.
The Cardinals claimed a 17-14 lead in the first quarter and a 27-24 halftime advantage. Lakeview used an 18-10 third quarter to take a 42-37 lead into the final quarter of regulation, which saw Coldwater outscore the Spartans 18-10 to knot the game up at 52-52. The game remained tied through the first three extra periods – 59-59 after the first OT, 64-64 after the second, and 70-70 after the third. Lakeview outscored the Cardinals in the fourth overtime 9-7 despite having three key players foul out earlier in the evening.
Gavin Taylor led Coldwater with 25 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks. Nico Downs added 13 points and 7 rebounds, Bennett McDonald contributed 11 points and 7 boards off the bench, and Ayden Dirschell had 9 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assists. The Cardinals wrapped up their season with an 11-12 overall record.
LeBron Campbell led all scorers with 39 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals, Pierson Blair had 10 points and 6 rebounds, and Spencer Shotwell added 10 points and 7 boards for the victorious Spartans. They improved to 13-10 and will face the Knights of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix Friday night for the District title. Loy Norrix advanced by eliminating Sturgis 67-32.
