LANSING, MI (WTVB) – On a 35-1 vote, the Michigan Senate passed a bill sponsored by Republican Jonathan Lindsey on Thursday which promotes medical transparency.
Senate Bill 95 is entitled the Hospital Price Transparency Act. Lindsey said it would prohibit hospitals from collecting debts if they do not comply with price transparency laws.
According to Lindsey, hospitals would also be required to publicly disclose the costs of their treatments and operations.
The bill received unanimous approval from the Senate Oversight Committee.
Lindsey said in a statement released by his office, “My number one policy priority has always been price transparency in health care. The fact is Americans and Michiganders have been suffering from declining health outcomes for decades. Price transparency is a necessary tool to help reverse negative health trends. While Senate Bill 95 is not the complete solution, it is an essential building block to making Michigan healthy again.”
