WHITE PIGEON, MI (WTVB) – While the 2024-25 winter sports season in Michigan will conclude Saturday with the MHSAA Girls Basketball Finals in East Lansing, the spring sports schedule got underway Friday as Union City traveled to White Pigeon for scheduled baseball and softball doubleheaders.
The Chargers exploded for six runs in the sixth inning, while three pitchers combined for a two-hitter, as they defeated the Chiefs 8-3 in the opener. Starter Eli Payne earned the victory by throwing three innings of no-hit ball with 3 walks and seven strikeouts. Aidan Decker doubled and Tucker Zweng had two hits.
Play was suspended during the third inning of the second game due to darkness; Union City was leading 9-2 at the time.
Union City returns to action next Thursday at Athens.
The Chargers and Chiefs split their softball twinbill. In the opener, the teams combined for 28 hits as White Pigeon earned a 17-13 victory. Ellie Williams collected three hits, Karlie Eagen singled and doubled, Hannah Schofield singled and homered, and Madison Krummrey smacked a triple.
Union City took the nightcap 18-11 in four innings, as the teams combined for 23 hits. Williams had two triples, a single, and four runs batted in, while Krummrey had two singles and a double and drove in six runs. Eagen was the winning pitcher.
The Chargers will host Burr Oak on Tuesday.
