COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 38-year-old Sherwood man who police say attacked another man on West Chicago Street in downtown Coldwater Tuesday night is being held in the Branch County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
Robert Jory Stevens was arraigned Thursday and charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm, a 10-year felony, a five-year felony of malicious destruction of property, and two counts of resisting arrest.
A witness told police they also saw Stevens breaking out the windows of the Southern Michigan Bank and Trust offices at 48 West Chicago earlier Tuesday.
Police reports say Stevens attacked Jordon Latta, who had stopped and got out of his vehicle near Monroe Street because Stevens was blocking the roadway shortly after 11:00 p.m.
The report says Latta suffered lacerations to his chin and face, and told officers he believed he had a dislocated shoulder.
Stevens was taken to the Branch County Jail, but was reportedly turned away because he was bloody from a cut he received after hitting his head in the back of a Coldwater Police Department patrol vehicle. He was released that night but taken back into custody Wednesday.
A probable cause conference for Stevens is scheduled for April 8, with a preliminary exam April 15, 2025.
