COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While a two-year community college remains a popular choice for many graduating students across Branch County, the Coldwater and Bronson school districts last year had the highest percentage of seniors attending college overall.
New numbers released by the state show 43% of 2024 graduating seniors at Coldwater and Bronson went on to college last fall, compared to 35% for Quincy, 34% for Tekonsha Community Schools, 33% for Union City, and 26% for Pansophia Academy.
The top choice for Coldwater Community Schools graduates was Kellogg Community College at 27%, followed by Trine University at 18%, Western Michigan University at 7%, and Michigan State University and the University of Michigan each at 6%.
For Bronson graduates, the top pick was Glen Oaks Community College at 28%, followed by Kellogg Community College at 24%, Western Michigan University and Michigan State University each at 12%, and another two-year community college, Southwest Michigan College, at 8%.
The number one choice for Quincy graduates also was Kellogg Community College at 30%, with Western Michigan University and Glen Oaks Community College each at 11%, Trine University at 8%, and Michigan State University at 5%.
For Union City graduates attending college, 44% chose Kellogg Community College, with the University of Olivet and Albion College each at 12%, and Glen Oaks Community College and Western Michigan University each at 8%.
63% of last year’s Tekonsha graduates picked Kellogg Community College, while 33% of Pansophia graduates heading to college selected Michigan State University.
According to the Michigan Department of Education, more than half of Michigan’s 100,344 high school graduates last year enrolled in a higher-learning institution within six months of graduating. 90% of them stayed in-state and chose from 72 Michigan undergraduate and community colleges.
Michigan State University was the top college for 2024 graduates, with 6,103 enrollees, which was 11% of all college enrollment.
