LANSING, MI (WTVB)- Hundreds of Michigan households are in jeopardy of losing their rental assistance as a federal pandemic housing program is beginning to run out of money.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program helps low-income families, the elderly, and disabled be able afford housing. The $5 billion program was supposed to provide aid until 2030, but The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) expects cash will run out by the middle of 2026.
They say the reason for cash running out is due to increasing inflation and housing costs.
The program that provides rental assistance to low-income families was paused in July 2024. Roughly 900 Michigan households currently use the emergency housing vouchers.
HUD sent out a letter last May to local agencies that administer the federal assistance, letting them know the voucher program will be ending early.
