COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Sheriff Fred Blankenship announced during Friday’s Branch County Board of Commissioners meeting that an agreement has been reached with Macomb County to house up to 100 inmates from that county while construction work is being performed at the Macomb County Jail over the next couple of years.
Blankenship said the housing of the Macomb County inmates will start next week and that Macomb County will be charged $40 a day for every inmate.
Blankenship estimated they will generate $1-point-4 million during the first year and nearly $3 million during the time the Macomb County inmates will be housed in Branch County.
The Sheriff said Branch County will be responsible for housing and feeding the Macomb County inmates.
As of now, the Macomb County inmates will be serving jail sentences but Blankenship said that might change in the future.
The Branch County Jail has a listed capacity of 220 inmates but the jail population has been far below that in recent months. There were 57 inmates in the Branch County Jail as of Friday morning with 47 males and 10 females.
