MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater opened up Interstate 8 play at Marshall Wednesday. The Redhawks took the opener 2-1, while the Cardinals prevailed in the nightcap 3-1.
The first game was scoreless until Marshall broke the ice in the sixth with a run. Royale Fleming’s RBI groundout in the top of the seventh brought home Joe Hayward and tied the game at 1-1. With two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, the Redhawks got the walkoff winner thanks to an error committed by the first baseman on a ground ball that allowed Lincoln Fuller to score from second. Dayton Ennis had two of Coldwater’s three hits as he singled and doubled. Relief pitcher Brayden Lackey was tagged with the loss.
In the second game, Coldwater scored all their runs in the first inning and used strong pitching from Owen Tappenden and Dayton Ennis to keep Marshall at bay. Tappenden gave up one run on one hit in 6⅓ innings of work with four walks and 10 strikeouts to pick up the victory; he also helped his own cause with an RBI double. Ennis earned the save with no hits and a strikeout.
The Cardinals are now 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the Interstate 8. They will host Three Rivers Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader. Coverage on WTVB will join the twinbill in progress Thursday at around 5:20 p.m., right after the Evening Journal.
