QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – After multiple early-season cancellations, Quincy finally played their first home games of the season Thursday against Springport. The Orioles lost the opener 4-2 but came back to win the nightcap 8-6.
In the first game, Spartan pitcher Morgan Shoemaker kept Quincy off the scoreboard until the seventh inning; she finished with 17 strikeouts. Miley Poindexter’s two-run single in the seventh brought home Cali Richards and Hannah Brown. Richards and Makiya Feltner had the other Oriole hits.
Feltner stepped up in the second game, as her two hits drove in three Quincy runs. Poindexter and Deziray Skirka also had two-hit games. Danika Skirka had eight strikeouts in five innings of relief duty.
The Orioles are now 6-4 overall, 3-1 in the Big 8, and will play at Sand Creek on Monday.
UNION CITY, MI – Union City pitchers allowed just three Maple Valley hits in the entire doubleheader, as the Chargers swept to victory over the visiting Lions 14-1 and 16-0.
In the first game, Ellie Williams hit two triples and drove in two runs, while Lauren Tundevold’s two singles brought home four runs and Calli Wilkinson had three hits and two RBIs as Union City collected 12 hits. Jillian McDonald allowed two hits with seven strikeouts in four innings of work for the win.
The Chargers had only six hits in the second game, but 14 Maple Valley errors helped contribute to the lopsided win. Kalie Eagen threw a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts, and Jezelle Nagel had two hits and drove in two runs.
Union City improves to 3-3 overall, 2-0 in the Big 8. They will welcome Colon, Concord, and Michigan Center for an invitational tournament on Saturday.
