UNDATED (WTVB) – This has been a record-breaking season for a number of track and field athletes across Branch County. Here’s a recap of some of the performances we’ve been made aware of.
COLDWATER
Coldwater sophomore Ella Grabowski broke her own school record in the long jump during the Cardinals’ April 29th dual meet at Harper Creek. Her jump of 17′ 8″ was just over three inches longer than the previous record of 17′ 4.75″ that she set last season.
Fellow sophomore Marie Powers now owns the school record in the shot put, with a throw of 41′ 7.5″ at the Union City Invitational on April 25th. The old record of 40′ 5.5″ was set by current teammate Elli Foley in 2023.
The boys 4x100m relay team, with seniors Dayne Knapp and Kaden Lewis, freshman Evan Lewis, and junior Naseem Taha, set a new school record with a time of :44.51 during the Cardinals’ tri-meet against Marshall and Jackson Northwest on April 22nd. The old record of :44.77 was set in 2013 by the team of Ryan Hadley, Tommy Nagel, Steven Suelzer, and Clark Borden.
QUINCY
At last Friday’s Oriole Classic track meet, two long-standing Quincy records were broken.
The longest standing of those records was in the high jump. Dan King set the old record in 1975 with a jump of 6′ 6.75″. Sophomore Noah Rufenacht broke it with his jump of 6′ 7″.
Junior Brookelyn Parker set the new school record in the 100m hurdles with her time of :15.43. The old record of :15.44 (converted from hand timing) was set by Kelli Michael in 1988.
Coaches are reminded that they can let us know about their teams’ record-breaking performances by sending an email to wtvbnews@wtvbam.com.
There’s still plenty of time for new records to be set this season, with Regionals on May 16th and the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Finals on May 31st.
