UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City hosted Coldwater Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field in a non-conference baseball doubleheader. The Cardinals won the opener 5-2, while the Chargers took the nightcap 12-2 in six innings.
The first game saw Coldwater break a 2-2 tie with three runs in the seventh inning. Dayton Ennis smacked a two-run home run over the left field fence and into the St. Joseph River, and Owen Tappenden added a solo homer to right. Ennis also had a double and went 2-for-3, while Tappenden added a double and finished the game 3-for-4. Royale Fleming and Luke Stout each hit a double. Union City was held to three hits: singles by Carson Liles, Alex Boyer, and Rick Austin.
The Chargers set the tone early in the second game, as they exploded for seven runs in the first inning and added three more in the second. Simon Swartzle drove in two runs. Cavin Pawlowski went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals with a single and a double.
Coldwater will take a 10-20 record into Saturday’s MHSAA Division 2 District at Marshall. The Cardinals will face Jackson Northwest at 12:30 p.m., with the winner facing either Parma Western or Marshall at 3 p.m. for the District championship.
Union City will host a Division 3 District on Saturday. The Chargers will take a 16-14 record into their 10 a.m. matchup against Quincy. Bronson will face Centreville at 12 noon, and the winners will play at 2 p.m. for the District title.
