UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Just weeks after guiding Union City Community Schools to pass their first bond issue in 53 years and setting the stage for a massive consolidation and remodel of the districts school buildings, superintendent Chris Katz has retired.
The Union City Community School Board accepted Katz’s retirement during their monthly meeting on Monday and approved contract with Patrick McKerr to be the new superintendent effective September 1 2025.
McKerr had been serving as the districts Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment over the past four years working closely along side of Katz. The board approved a three year contract for McKerr at a salary of $126,690.
As for Katz, he has been employed by Union City Schools for 40 years.
In his final days as superintendent, Katz and the board put together a $19.1 million, 30-year bond issue, which voters passed August 5, after he won a matching $23.625 million state grant to consolidate the middle and high schools and to renovate and upgrade the 50-plus-year-old buildings.
