COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – As many schools grapple with the decision of whether or not to ban cell phones in the classrooms after a bill to do so statewide stalled in the senate this summer, State Senator Jonathon Lindsey says he’s in favor of eliminating the devices during class time instruction.
He says the biggest pushback he receives are from parents concerned about students being able to communicate in case of an emergency
Lindsey did applaud schools that have already taken the steps to eliminate phones in the classroom including Pansophia Academy earlier this week, and the Colwater Community Schools who passed the first reading of a revised policy during an August 5 special meeting, aiming to prohibit the use of personal communication devices by students throughout the school day.
A second reading of the policy is scheduled for the regular board meeting August 25 during the boards regular session.
