COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Community Schools Board of Education approved the second reading of a revised policy on Monday night which prohibits the use of personal communication devices by students throughout the school day.
The board’s Policy Advisory committee along with Superintendent Paul Flynn and High School Principal Doctor Steven Hope recommended the change.
The board passed the first reading of the revised policy during an August 5 special meeting.
Flynn said the student ban on cell phone use only covers the time they are in the classroom.
Board member Bob Steel was not totally satisfied with the policy and cast the only no vote.
The board passed the revised policy on a 5-1 vote.
This move aligns with a broader trend, as at least 33 states have enacted laws or policies regulating student cellphone use in K-12 public schools, with many citing distractions and mental health concerns as key reasons.
A bill to ban cell phones in the classroom statewide in Michigan stalled in the state Senate earlier this year.
